Scones

I baked these goodies last evening for the first time and they turned out to be the best go with a cup of tea.

Is it bread, a cake, or a biscuit? I am not sure what to call this, but scone is cake like bread which is crispy outside and crumbly inside. These puffy, pale beauties can be made with a few basic ingredients from your kitchen. Just whip all the ingredients in a food processor, and it is ready to go into the oven. Within half-an-hour these are ready to pamper your taste buds.

I have made a lot of changes to the actual recipe, and to my surprise it turned out to be the best.

Ingredients
2 cups all purpose floor
1/3 cup sugar
½ cup unsalted cold butter, cut into small pieces
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips
½ cup dried cranberries (dried fruits of your choice)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 egg
½ cup + 2 tbsp milk
coarse sugar for sprinkling

Method
  • Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
  • Line a baking sheet with butter paper or aluminium foil.
  • In a food processor, add flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pulse it once.
  • Add the butter pieces (directly from refrigerator) to the dry ingredients and pulse until the mixture looks crumbly.
  • Now add egg, ½ cup milk, vanilla extract and combine well.
  • Add the chocolate chips, dried cranberries, and blend just until combined.
  • Dump the dough onto a floured surface and knead it gently to pull it together (do not over do).
  • Shape it into a circle that is ¾ inch thick, cut it into 8 triangles and place them onto the baking sheet.
  • Brush the tops with little milk and sprinkle sugar over them.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes OR until golden brown and / a toothpick inserted into middle comes out clean.

Give at least 5 minutes to cool before indulging into its flavors, otherwise you may burn yourself ;P

Note : If you are not using food processor, mix all the dry ingredients, add butter and rub in with your fingers until it looks like fine crumbs.
